Mexico wil send its Olympic team to the Copa America Argentina 2011

April 9, 2010 – 11:05 am

South America’s confederation approved Mexico’s petition to send its Olympic team, bolstered by five overage players, to next year’s Copa America, the continent’s nations championship.

Mexico, which has taken part in every Copa America since 1993, will restrict its roster to players eligible for the 2012 London Olympics, those born in 1989 and later, plus the older additions. The Olympics’ men’s tournament is for U-23 teams.

Mexico’s Olympic team could full national team stars Carlos Vela (Arsenal), Giovani Dos Santos (Galatasaray) and his younger brother, Jonathan (Barcelona), plus Atlas midfielder Edgar Pacheco and Toluca forward Nestor Calderon, whom Mexico national coach Javier Aguirre used in friendlies last year.

Giovani Dos Santos and Vela were born in 1989. Every other player from Mexico’s 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship winner was born in 1988. Jonathan Dos Santos, Pacheco and Calderon were born in 1990.

Mexico has finished second twice, losing in the final to Argentina in 1993 and to Colombia in 2001, and third twice in seven Copa America appearances. The tournament, formerly a biennial event, is played every four years. Next year’s Copa America will be played in Argentina.
