Dakar Rally STAGE 10 – SUMMARY
January 12, 2010 – 9:20 pmCarlos Sainz won the 10th stage of the Dakar Rally to extend his lead over fellow Volkswagen driver Nasser Al-Attiyah.
The Spaniard triumphed between La Serena and Santiago in Chile to move 10 minutes, six seconds clear of the Qatari – an improvement of 1:40 compared with Monday evening.
Second on the 238km special stage was Stephane Peterhansel, only 28 seconds back from the winner.
The BMW-driving Frenchman stands fourth overall, 2:14:20 behind the rally leader, while VW’s Mark Miller is third – where he also finished on Tuesday – 28:19 off the pace after coming home 1:02 short of Sainz.
Al-Attiyah was fourth.
There are 14 stages in this year’s race, held in Argentina and Chile, ending in Buenos Aires on Saturday.
Marc Coma won the 10th stage of the Dakar Rally between La Serena and Santiago in Chile.
The KTM-riding Spaniard, who also won the previous stage, finished two minutes, six seconds ahead of David Fretigne of Yamaha on the 238km special stage.
Fretigne’s French compatriot Cyril Despres finished sixth, 6:25 off the pace, and remains in the overall lead by a massive 1:22:49 from fellow KTM rider Pal Ullevalseter, who came in eighth.
Aprilia’s Francisco Lopez Contardo in third is now just over a minute behind the Norwegian after finishing fifth on Tuesday while Yamaha’s Helder Rodrigues – third on the day – is 52 seconds further back.
Coma, who had been challenging to win the rally in Chile and Argentina, has won three stages in this year’s race – but was penalised by six hours for an illegal tyre change late last week and stands 17th overall, 6:54:24 behind Despres.
