October 26, 2009 – 4:12 pmFormer Germany captain Lothar Matthaus has been appointed as coach of Racing Club, who are based in Avellaneda near Buenos Aires in Argentina.
The 1990 World Cup winner, who left his last job in charge of Israeli side Maccabi Netanya in April, will take over a Racing side second bottom of the Apertura table.
They are yet to win in 10 matches this season, having taken just five points.
Racing president Rodolfo Molina told a press conference: “Racing Club has engaged the services of Lothar Matthaus for first-team coach.
“This negotiation has been conducted in the strictest confidence so we have avoided talking to reporters.”
Matthaus, who won 150 caps for Germany, has previously coached Rapid Vienna, Partizan Belgrade, the Hungarian national team, Brazilian side Atletico Paranaense and Salzburg.
Interim coach Juan Barbas will remain as his assistant.
