Football: Argentina Vs. Peru in Buenos Aires.

September 29, 2009 – 3:42 pm

Buenos Aires, Sep. 23 (ANDINA).- The executive committee of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed that the Argentine national team will return to playing at River Plate’s Monumental stadium for next month’s 2010 World Cup qualifier with Peru.

Argentina will return to the venue after suffering a devastating 3-1 defeat to Brazil when shifted to the Gigante de Arroyito stadium in Rosario, at the request of Diego Maradona and his squad. It was Argentina’s first defeat at home since being thrashed 5-0 by Colombia 16 years ago.

The encounter with the Peruvians will take place on October 19, informed Julio Macchi, the vice-president of River Plate.

Four days later Argentina will face fierce rivals Uruguay at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo. The match could be a crucial one, because both teams could be fighting for fifth place in the South American qualifying group, which would mean engaging in a two-legged playoff with the fourth-placed team from the CONCACAF region.

Maradona was hoping to continue to play outside of Buenos Aires, however, unlike last month, Julio Grondona, the president of AFA, left him with no say.

Argentina are in serious danger of missing out on the World Cup for the first time in forty years, Goal.com reported.
